Video overview: Short video on why child marriage should end and its causes.
Quite a few girls who were forced into an early marriage or eloped because of an out-of-wedlock child have come out on the record and say they greatly regretted it. Some claim to have been abused by their husbands; others are forced into providing more children. A few girls say that their husbands have gone so far as to completely leave them, giving them no financial support. With children to take care of, these young wives and mothers are thrown into deep poverty. Many have had to sell their daughters into marriage with the hopes that they will be provided for. Without enough food or adequate healthcare, these girls and their children often are malnourished, sickly, or dead.
